In our free-market society, drug companies are allowed to market their products directly to the consumer. Over the years, we have all seen the television airwaves blanketed with commercials for drugs to help with all kinds of problems. Anytime you open a magazine, there are glossy, multi-page advertisements touting some new wonder drug.
These companies remind you to “ask your doctor if this drug is right for you.” Even if your doctor recommends a drug, and it is FDA approved, these medications may cause serious harm.
People taking prescription and over-the-counter medications are aware that drugs may cause certain side-effects, or “adverse reactions.” But, they trust that those side effects will be minor.
However, and estimated 4.5 million people visit the emergency room each year due to a severe side effect of a drug. And that is only the cases where a drug reaction was not identified as the main cause.
